Understanding the power of hashtags and taking the time to create a great one can make a big difference in the outcome of your event.
The number sign, the pound key, the octothorpe, whatever you want to call it, the hashtag has been around for a long time. It was used as a way to highlight words with special meaning. Hashtags are now used to share and search the social web. Users on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Tumblr might be wanting to keep track of everything they post on a certain topic, or they might be looking to connect with others interested in that same topic. Use hashtags to provide a channel to make sure conversations about your event are easy to find. When you search or click your event hashtag, you’ll see posts from everyone that used it. Before an event, your event hashtag helps get the word out. Ask influencers to share it as social proof, a way to generate interest and an easy way for people to find out more information. During your event, your hashtag can help event goers connect. They can find other attendees they’d like to meet, share the most interesting moments and give you real-time feedback on how your event is going. After your event, your hashtag can be used to send out event highlights and keep the positive feelings alive.
When deciding on an event hashtag, steer clear of vague. Something general like #nyeparty will most like bring up thousands of tweets that have nothing to do with your party. You’ll want to be specific, but not confusing. If you’re hosting a New Year’s Eve party, try your organization’s initials + NYE. Make it short enough so that the people tweeting with your hashtag still have enough room to write something. They’ve only got 140 characters! Only use one hashtag. Any more than that and you’re edging in on spam territory. It’s tempting to try and promote #yourevent #withwords #youthink #arerelevant, but Questlove knows better and so should you. Encourage people to live tweet and Instagram your event as it’s happening. Ask questions using the hashtag and offer incentives for quality posts.
